SAFETY SPECIAL
waterproof aprons should be washed
daily with hot soapy water outside the
house. Both the inside and outside of the
gloves should be washed thoroughly.
When handling pesticides, avoid
materials likely to absorb and retain
pesticide residues.
Among these are cloth and leather
shoes or sneakers, a baseball cap, and a
wrist watch with a leather band.
These materials absorb chemicals
and prolong exposure to the wearer.0
TEST YOUR IQ IN
CHEMICAL SAFETY
Answer the following questions
with true or false.
1. Chemicals can enter the body
through inhalation (breathing), in-
gestion (by mouth) and absorption
(through skin).
2. A very toxic chemical will have
the "skull and crossbones" on the label
in an octagonal shape.
3. It is acceptable to dump leftover
chemicals into streams since this will
dilute them.
4. The only time a person has to
read the label on chemical containers is
when he or she wants to know how to
mix the chemicals properly.
5. The best protection available for
handing powdered pesticides is a
particulate dust mask.
6. The accepted method of re-
cording the relative toxicity of a
pesticide is the Lethal Dose 50 per cent
(LD50) value.
7. A very low LD50 value means
that a chemical is highly toxic.
8. A "herbicide" is used to kill
insects and rats.
9. You should not wash your
pesticide -contaminated clothing with
other clothes.
10. Protective clothing is not
necessary when spraying pesticides
providing there is no wind.
11. Some pesticides can be easily
absorbed through unbroken skin in
harmful quantities.
12. The degree of toxicity of a
particular chemical is indicated on the
label.
13. Always inspect pesticide con-
tainers for leaks before handling them.
