feeding it."
I asked Jim to reset the trap and add
another as reinforcement. I also
suggested using peanut butter and
cheeze whiz — they were supposed to
work well. He complied, more to
humour me, I think, than because he
thought my suggestions would work.
I cancelled my trip to town; no
errands were so important that I was
going to drive with a mouse in the truck.
Several times that day, I peeked through
the truck window in hope of fmding a
caught mouse, but I was disappointed.
Jim's check that evening came up empty
too. I insisted that he set yet another
trap. I meant business.
By the next morning, the mouse had
been caught. I breathed a sigh of relief
and got my transportation back.
All was quiet until a few nights later.
When Jim came home from work, he
headed straight for the shelf that held the
retired mousetraps.
"There's a mouse in my car," he
said.
I looked at him doubtfully. "Are you
sure?" I asked. He ignored my question,
and went on to tell that he'd hardly left
home that morning when, leaning over
to adjust the heat lever, he saw a mouse
jump onto his hand and run up his coat
sleeve. His startled reaction was such
that he and his car ended up straddling
the ditch.
Jim wasted no time preparing two
mousetraps. I smiled as I watched him
apply the peanut butter and cheeze whiz.
When the traps were properly smeared
with food, he went promptly to the car to
set them. It did seem to make all the
difference when the mouse was in his
vehicle.0
