The Rural Voice, 1988-06, Page 33SPECIAL VIIItk OPPMB TASK FORCE OFFERS GUIDELINES The task force appointed by the Ontario Pork Producers Marketing Board to respond to concerns about drug residues in pork has produced the fol- lowing recommendations: 1. A healthy swine herd and good management practices can eliminate or reduce the need for medication. 2. If medication is required, use only products specified for treating the problem. 3. When using medication, read and follow recommended dosage levels and withdrawal times, prior to slaughter. 4. Maintain records of animals treated and withdrawal time. 5. Blend concentrated medications into soybean meal or supplement prior to adding to the main mix to ensure uniform dispersal, or have your feed supplier supply a medicated premix or supplemeni 6. Weigh ingredients for medicated feeds and/or water accurately. Calibrate scales and volumetric containers regu- larly. Make one person responsible. 7. Establish a mixing sequence pattern after making medicated feeds, mix non -medicated feeds to flush the system and to be fed to non -marketable animals. Keep feed samples for future analysis, if necessary. 8. Prevent non -medicated feeds from being contaminated with medi- cated feeds. Insist on clean delivery trucks. Avoid using the same feed cart for non -medicated and medicated feed. If possible, use separate water lines for medicated water. 9. Clean equipment, storage bins, feeding troughs, etc. when switching from medicated to non -medicated feed. As an alternative, hogs may be moved to a clean pen 48 hours after the removal of medicated feed. 10. Avoid the recycling of manure in the finisher area. Finishing pigs should not have access to manure from pigs fed medication. 11. Review your medication use with your veterinarian, feed supplier, and OMAF personnel. 12. To avoid residues, cull sows must be treated similarly to finishing hogs.0 H.
