OPC INNOVATION
WINNERS CHOSEN
Farmers from Hensall, Guelph, and
Sunderland are the three winners of the
1988 Ontario Pork Congress Innovation
Competition.
Rick Etherington of R. R. 1, Hensall
devised some hooks for temporary di-
vider boards used to direct sows when
moving them. The simple inverted U
hooks keep the boards in place.
Gary Houghton of R. R. 1, Guelph
developed an environmental alarm sys-
tem which monitors high and low tem-
peratures (adjustable for the time of
year), fan failure, and total power fail-
ure. The system is on all the time and
never needs testing.
Ted and Judy Jensen of R. R. 5,
Sunderland added a removable two-
inch -diameter pipe eight inches above
the floor across the middle of bedded
farrowing pens with anti -crush bars
along the outside partitions. The centre
bar encourages sows to lie down care-
fully and lengthwise close to a side
creep, which has meant a gain of 3/4 of
a pig per litter for the Jensens.
Three additional farmers received
honorable mention.
Rick Etherington of R. R. 5, Hensall
switched from using inconvenient scal-
pel blades to a common utility knife.
The knife's blade can be snapped off
when it gets dull, and saves money on
replacement blades.
Bill Jongejan of R. R. 2, Goderich
found that the legs of dry -sow stalls on
his farm were rusting badly. The front
legs were replaced, but the Jongejans
suspended the back of the stalls rather
than replace the back legs. Tubing (of 1
1/2") was welded across the back of the
crates and was suspended every four
inches, providing a clear area for scrap-
ing and less teat and udder damage to
sows.
Warren Wolfe of R. R. 5, Mitchell,
to promote easy and frequent removal of
creep feeders for baby pigs, bolted a
piece of 1/2 -inch plywood to the back of
the feeder. On the creep partitions two
narrow vertical strips of plywood were
attached to act as slide rails.
The Ontario Pork Congress honours
innovators annually. The innovations
are on display at the show.0
