The Rural Voice, 1988-06, Page 9FEEDBACK
most of the present generation of
farmers know. Since he left the board,
there have been occasions I phoned
him to tap into his great experience
and to ask his opinion on certain
issues.
Howard Malcolm was elected to
the board in 1972, two years before
mc and, like Curtin, rose to chairman
of the board. Howard's main achieve-
ment has been to minimize the dam-
age inflicted on Canadian hog produc-
ers by the protectionist countervail
actions of the U.S. hog men.
The third, but by no means the
least of the three award winners, is
Tom Smith, the genial past chairman
of the board. I have observed Tom
since he came on the board in 1975.
From the start it was evident that the
OPPMB gained a great brain. Tom
has a tremendous grasp of the issues.
This was recognized nationally when
he was elected as vice-chairman of the
Canadian Pork Council.
No one deserves the recognition
more than the three giants of the pork
industry mentioned here.0

TIMELY TREATMENT
Your picking of timely articles for
The Rural Voice always amazes me.
The May issue was no exception.
The feature "What Rights for the
Animals" was well done and it's a
subject we're going to hear more about
and on which we need to be more
informed.
As well, the feature on Avon
Swine Inc. entitled "Job Satisfaction,"
regarding farm employees, was of the
kind I'd like to see more of. Also,
thanks for the chuckle I got out of
Adrian Vos' Notebook column.0
