tures will increase rainfall, it will be
offset by less snowfall and more evapo-
ration of soil moisture. Milder Cana-
dian winters will become more com-
mon, but so will drought -ridden sum-
mers.
Water may become a greater factor
in food production and even population
distribution. For example, scientists
have predicted a decrease in fresh water
supplies in the Great Lakes Basin
through evaporation and increased
consumption, irrigation, and industrial
use.
At the same time, rising sea levels
caused by a partial melting of the polar
ice caps will threaten large tracts of the
world's agricultural lowlands.0
