COALITION WANTS
LAND PRESERVED
The Friends of Foodland are
fighting urban encroachment on
farm land, and one of the battle-
grounds is northeast of Toronto.
In a statement released last
month, the group proposed that all
publically owned land in Markham,
Pickering, and Scarborough be
placed in a foodland and nature trust.
The area, dubbed "The Last
Green Door," shouldn't be put on the
real estate market, the group says.
"If the land is sold to private indi-
viduals, some will fall into the hands
of those who see it as a speculative
investment and will immediately
create pressures to extend urban
boundaries," says Elbert van
Donkersgoed, coalition chairman.
The group includes, among oth-
ers, the Preservation of Agricultural
Lands Society (PALS).0
