JUNIOR FARMERS
MOUNT CAMPAIGN
AGAINST DIABETES
The Junior Farmers Association of
Ontario reports that it will be raising
funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Founda-
tion this month and next.
The money raised by the campaign
will be presented to the diabetes founda-
tion at the Junior Farmers annual confer-
ence on March 19 in Toronto.
Juvenile diabetes, the most severe
form of diabetes, can appear any time
during a person's life, though it is most
common between infancy and the late
thirties. Diabetes is the third leading
cause of death in North America, after
heart disease and cancer.
Local clubs ask that you help them to
reach the provincial goal of $10,000.0
SOMATOTROPIN
WILL BE STUDIED
Two University of Guelph profes-
sors have received $400,000 to examine
the effectiveness of the hormone bovine
somatotropin (BST).
The money is the largest University
Research Incentive Fund (URIF) award
ever directed to the University of
Guelph. Cyanamid Canada Inc. is a
partner in the research.
Professors John Burton and Brian
McBride began studying BST three
years ago. "With this funding," Profes-
sor Burton says, "we can expand our
research into areas that are important to
both the agriculture industry and to
consumers."
"The fundamental support of the
URIF award allows us to confirm the
full safety of this product," Professor
McBride adds.0
