Asked where all the farm workers of a few years ago have gone, Wilmer Beckett replies, "I don't know, but they didn't go into agricul- ture." There just aren't that many farm kids staying on the farm anymore — there is more money elsewhere. Farmers today must do the work them- selves or find enough money to pay employees. Dealing with the worker shortage, for employment agencies and farmers, has become a hard task. The time it takes to place a worker varies. For a permanent job, back- ground checks within Canada's human rights guidelines are made. An appli- cant who already has a job may have to give a few weeks' notice. "If the prospective employee is unemployed already, it's much quicker, maybe a couple of days," Beckett says. AES also has information on programs related to agriculture. One such program is the Canadian Rural Transition Program designed to help people who, for financial reasons, must leave farming. The program, operated by the Canada Employment Centre, can provide a transition grant, training assistance, travel and reloca- tion assistance, job counselling, and a self-employment grant.. A local advisory group, the Agri- cultural Employment Board, meets with the management of AES several times a year. Made up of representa- tives from the various farm sectors in Grey and Bruce counties, the 14 -mem- ber board reports on respective com- modities and helps AES keep on top of the farm scene. The groups represented on the board include the Grey and Bruce County milk committees, cattlemen's associations, federations of agricul- ture, OMAF offices, and Canada Employment Centres as well as the Bruce County Soil and Crop Associ- ation, the Grey County Pork Producers Association, the Southern Georgian Bay Fruit Growers Association, and a worker with agricultural experience. Winter is a busy time for AES staff, who work one season ahead, and are now lining up the spring season. In February and March interviews with university students take place, and their jobs begin in April. Staff members will also be seen at a variety of agricultural meetings and events.0
