The Rural Voice, 1988-01, Page 41ADVICE LOOK CRITICALLY AT MARKETING The bilateral free trade agreement makes us rethink markets and market- ing. It's a good time to ask yourself some questions. Thinking about the answers may be productive. For example, do you "market" your product or do you simply "send" it out to a market? Do you compare different markets before you ship your product? Do you understand how your market process works? Do you know if there is a market for your product before you start to grow it? Do you consider the profit potential of an enterprise before you go into it? Are you sure the market price will cover your cost of production before you start to grow your product? Do you know your cost of produc- tion (per hl, cwt., or bu.)? Have you investigated the possibil- ity of getting involved in a high profit enterprise on a short-term basis? Sun- flowers, for example, were big in 1986. Do you farm with a plan to make a profit or do you farm to farm? Do you believe that the future is black or do you believe that every black cloud has a silver lining and it's up to you to look for it? If you're somewhere in between, where are you?0 W. J.
