FEEDBACK
concession. Any new assistance in
this area must be approved by the U.S.
My cattlemen neighbours tell me
that the main benefit of free trade
across the border is the 72 -cent dollar.
Industrially, the figure for "investi-
gation free" corporate takeovers is
raised from five million to well over a
hundred million dollars. Press reports
suggest that 1,700 Canadian compa-
nies have been taken over since the
federal Conservative government took
office and scrapped FIRA. Compara-
tive figures suggest that foreign own-
ership accounts for one per cent of
West German industry, two per cent of
French, three per cent of the U.K.'s,
and 30 per cent of Canadian.
In my view, the Mulroney govern-
ment has given itself a blank cheque in
the deal, and exposes Canadian agri-
culture and natural resources to the
economic preponderance of U.S.
multinationals.
Economic uncertainty and possible
retaliation from overseas have already
created doubts in the minds of some
U.S. congressmen about a "get tough
with foreigners protectionist Trade
Bill," which presumably sold this
government the fast track approach.
Economic control equals political
control. The U.S. is governed by its
big corporate interest groups. This
deal threatens our parliamentary sys-
tem of government, which to me is
what sovereignty is all about.
Think again, Adrian.
