Townsman, 1992-01, Page 20For Hensall couple, decision to marry a mountainous step Darene Yavorsky and Dan Holm mar- ried amidst picturesque splendour Today, in our changing society there are as many people planning a second trip down the aisle as there are those embarking on their first marital jour- ney. While the image of the dewy- eyed bride, a vision in satin and lace, exchanging vows with her debonair, tuxedoed groom in front of hundreds of teary wedding guests, is the one that typically comes to mind when we think of weddings, there are many for whom, that idea means less than it once did. But, keeping it simple, doesn't necessarily mean it has to be boring! When Darene Yavorsky, Editor of The Rural Voice and photographer Dan Holm decided to marry in the late 80's they both agreed they wanted it simple. "We had both done the tradi- tional thing before and neither of us wanted anything particularly splashy this time," said the petite brunette. "So we agreed to simplify things and do it the way we wanted; a way that reflected who we are." She and Dan, both of whom she describes as "subdued partiers", want- ed to plan a wedding that would be both meaningful and enjoyable to the people who mattered most - the two of them. Darene's brother Greg, an Alpine guide and his wife Lorette had been married the year before in a very sim- ple ceremony, so Darene says they saw how unpretentiously it could be done. The betrothed couple flew to Banff, where the arrangements had already been made for the ceremony, which took place on October 17, 1986. "It was a nice time of year to be married. Not too hot, not too cold," said Darene. The day before the ceremony, the couple met briefly with the Justice of the Peace who would be marrying them, to complete the paper work. For the occasion, the bride wore a grey sweater and corduroy pants; the groom was similarily attired. Prior to the nuptials, they and their attendants, Greg and Lorene, who were the only witnesses to the ceremony, travelled to Sulphur Mountain for a picnic. The site of the wedding was at the ruins of an old church on the side of a moun- tain. "It was wonderful," said Darene. "The only thing you could see were the mountains and trees." When the ceremony ended, the entourage cracked open a bottle of champagne to celebrate, after which the newlyweds went out to dinner then spent the evening watching videos, said Darene, with a chuckle. "We had been living in Sleeman, Ontario, so hydro was a real treat." As well as having minimal prepara- tions for the event, Darene and Dan's nuptials were relatively inexpensive. "The air fare to get there was the major cost," said Darene. So, for the couple, who do not relish the idea of a lavish wedding ceremo- ny, a simple occasion need not be pre- dictable. With a little imagination, the simple wedding can be a beautiful, meaningful beginning to a new life. 18 TOWNSMAN/JANUARY-FEBRUARY 1992 ilage laetteetabieS Specializing in Quality Gifts, Service & Discount Prices With a wide selection meeting the gift wishes for every bride on your list.
