would require minimal bending. Car-
dinal Kitchens of London designed a
spacious, sensible work space in what
had previously been the dining room.
Eight pull-out drawers have provzn to
be a tremendous physical convenience
for Doris. There is a built-in oven, as
well, that eliminates any need for
excessive bending or stretching. The
centre island houses a sink and cup-
boards, making optimum use of space
and storage. The white colour bright-
ens the room and with its open con-
cept it is an excellent place to work
and entertain.
Interestingly, the addition's interior
was painted in eight varying shades of
blue and green, but the hues are so

subtle it is hardly discernable until
brought to one's attention. Decorator
Bonnie McArthur, whose work Doris
had seen before, made her choices
then brought in the painters. "There
were eight of them came in here and I
had no idea how or where they were
all going to work." Doris said. "But,
they were the best bunch. They got
the job done and I hardly knew they
were heje."
The floor of the new room was done
in ceramic tile, something she admits,
she finds a little cool, but unavoidable
as there was no basement in the house
so cement had to be put down.
The tiny space at the rear of the
house that was originally the kitchen
is now a handy laundry area and two-
piece bath.
The entire project was completed in
November and the overall effect is
pleasing. The deep-set, low windows
synonymous with a stone house, have
been retained in the new addition and
Doris now has the room she needs to
enjoy friends and family entertaining;
and to pull out her dining room table.
The old Thompson homestead is a
place so rich in history and heritage it
can only be imagined as one full of
people and life. It is a place, where
one can certainly, as Doris's daughter
has said, come home to renew oneself.
