The contractor was not, however, the
only one with tricks up his sleeve as it
turned out. The windowkits used to
trim around circular windows like the
one incorporated into the addition are,
the Esserys discovered, rather costly.
Joe experimented and came up with a
solution that worked adequately. On
a 1 x 10 piece of pine panelling, he
made a pattern of the window curve,
then cut it out with a jigsaw. To bend
it, he simply wet it. Mr. Stirling
routered the grooves into the pieces so
they would match the rest of the trim
work. The Esserys are pleased with
the money saving results and have
shared the method with others. "He
has people coming often, asking him
how he did it," Joyce says proudly.
Unlike the kitchen renovation, this
room caused few headaches for the
Esserys as it was easily closed off
while construction was taking place.
One minor setback occurred, howev-
er, when Joe sustained a neck injury.
"We were hoping to have the room at
least livable by Christmas, but we
couldn't get anyone in on such short
notice to finish it," said Joe.
"We worked away on it together,
doing as much as Joe could handle at
a time and we managed to get it fin-
ished," Joyce stated. Just in time. The
Friday before Christmas the rug was
installed and the furniture moved in
the next day. The new alcove was the
perfect focal point for the Christmas
tree.
While the Esserys have the satisfac-
tion of knowing that the beautiful
home they have created has been a
product of their hard work and cre-
ativity they wisely knew when to
bow to expertise. This spring the cou-
ple plans to complete the landscaping.
Their spacious yard sits at the edge of
Vanastra and they want to make the
most of its attributes, to make it an
attractive and suitable compliment to
their home. A landscaping contractor
will be hired for the job.
"I think it's important to know when
to call professionals," Joyce said. "It's
nice to be able to do the work your-
self, but I think it's wise to seek the
advice of professionals. Their input
and assistance was invaluable."
