CANOLA GETS
RECOGNITION
The Canadian canola industry has
been making friends across the border.
Last month, the American Health
Foundation of New York presented the
Procter and Gamble Company with the
1987 Food Product of the Year Award
for Puritan Oil. Puritan is made of 100
per cent Canadian canola oil.
The American Health Foundation is
a non-profit organization dedicated to
preventive medicine.
In making the award, the foundation
cited Puritan oil as a great innovation
that helps Americans adhere to recom-
mended U.S. dietary guidelines. Canola
oil has only six per cent saturated fat —
lower than any other vegetable oil.
Canola has its origins in rapeseed,
which prairie producers began growing
in the 1940s as an alternative to wheat. It
was originally used as a marine lubricat-
ing oil.
Research and development by gov-
ernment and industry over the years
resulted in canola oil being deemed safe
for human consumption by Health and
Welfare Canada in the mid-1970s. In
the early 1980s, the U.S. granted Gener-
ally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) status
to Canadian canola oil.
Today, export and domestic sales
make canola a billion -dollar industry in
Canada. Last year, canola exports
reached a record 2.1 -million tonnes.0
MARKETING CLUB
MEETING PLANNED
In these times of large surpluses, the
central problem for farmers is not to
produce more, but to sell their produce
better.
To meet the challenge of learning
the market, some farmers have organ-
ized marketing clubs.
In Huron County, a meeting for
producers interested in forming a mar-
keting club will be held Wednesday,
December 9 at 1:30 p.m. in the Clinton
OMAF boardroom.
Initially, a club for Central Huron
will be discussed, but if enough produc-
ers attend from other areas of the county,
more clubs could be formed. Contact
the Huron OMAF for details.0
