CORN PLANTS
DEVELOPED
Scientists for the Sandoz Crop Pro-
tection Corporation, an affiliate of
Northrup King Seeds Ltd., have pro-
duced genetically transformed corn
plants.
Dr. Carol Rhodes, a Sandoz research
scientist, reports that the experiment
involved the direct uptake of recombi-
nant DNA into corn protoplasts and the
subsequent growth of these protoplasts
into plants.
This is the first report of transformed
corn plants being produced by this tech-
nique. The long-term significance is the
potential for the insertion of useful
genes into a major world crop.
Northrup King Seeds Ltd. predicts
an exciting future in hybrid develop-
ment as the results of this research begin
to show in commercial seed produc-
