The Rural Voice, 1987-10, Page 53NEWS PROPOSALS FOR MACHINERY ACT ARE RELEASED Those with comments on the pro- posed legislation to standardize the practices of Ontario's farm machinery sector have until October 20 to put them in writing and send them to the Ontario Farm Machinery Board. The new Farm Implement Act calls for a registration system for distributors and dealers as well as standardized sales contracts, minimum warranties, and guarantees for the availability of parts. There would also be provisions to return equipment that fails to perform to manufacturer's specifications, supervi- sion of safety measures, and provision for buy-back agreements between dis- tributors and dealers. The act would be administered by a board of manufacturers, wholesalers, retail dealers, and farmers. The board would mediate any disputes. The act may replace the Voluntary Certification Program which was intro- duced in 1980 with the support of 90 per cent of machinery dealers and distribu- tors. Support for the program, however, has diminished in recent years. Copies of the proposed act are avail- able from John Kessler at 416-963- 2156. Submissions should be sent to Kessler at the Ontario Farm Machinery Board, 7th Floor, 801 Bay Street, Toronto, M7A 2B7.0 USES FOR CORN COULD EXPAND With current record stocks of corn, corn producers could benefit from new uses for their crop. According to Charles Scott of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the U.S., almost anything made with petro- leum can be made with corn. New mar- kets will depend on the relative costs. Biodegradable plastics made from corn starch could replace packaging ma- terials, styrofoam cups, disposable serv- ice ware, and other products from petro- leum. Construction materials and tex- tiles could use from corn protein fibre.Q 4p NEW NEILICS LIMITED • Custom Cylinder building & repair includingTruck Hoists, Fork Lifts, etc. • Hydraulic Jack repair & service • General Machining • Hoses & Fittings NEW -LIFT HYDRAULICS Limited Wallace Ave., N.
