Notessansi Dims, AUOC 1 on 4 THE RURAL VOICE EDITOR'S DESK The agricultura community ' s always been blessed with excellent farm leaders. One of those leaders was Barnie Evans, whose column appeared regularly in The Rural Voice. Barnie recently died of cancer. His accomplishments are legion, and this month, where his column used to appear, the Hon. Eugene Whelan expresses for many of us how deeply Barnie will be missed. Gord Wainman also knew Barnie Evans, and recognized his contribution to agriculture. Gord, an urban -based agricultural reporter, writes his first Rural Voice column this month. He delivers some harsh conclusions about the agricultural situation, but they are comments born of the same kind of concern paramount to Barnie Evans. In our features this month, Iris Brown surveys farm real estate and related issues—foreign ownership and land rental — in the counties of Huron, Perth, Grey, and Bruce. Eloise Calhoun talks to the Irvines of Shake- speare, who are well-known for their purebred Galloway cattle. And Adrian Vos provides some back- ground on the free trade talks, which at press time were in limbo. We' ve also captured some of the people and events at the International Plowing Match. The match, as Cathy Laird writes in our Notebook department, is not only a positive reminder of how much farmers have achieved, but of how much farmers have to appreciate. As Eugene Whelan notes, achieve- ments require a fighting spirit. They also require a concerted, constructive effort on the part of individuals and groups. As Whelan also says, "It is too bad there are not more Barnie Evans' ."0 STEEL IS OUR SPECIALTY We have a large selection of: flats, rounds, tubing, re -bar, hog panels, beams, plate, survey bars, and items too numerous to mention.
