The 40 members of the association represent about one-third of the total producers in the Grey -Bruce area. While the average Grey -Bruce pro- ducer has 300 to 400 taps, the numbers range from 15 taps in the backyard to one member who has 7,000 taps. Chairman Bob Lesperance recently expanded to 2,300 trees in his 35 -acre maple bush. He also milks 30 cows, and estimates that 25 per cent of his income is derived from the sale of maple prod- ucts on his farm near Allenford. Producers have experienced two very poor years, this year and last, when there was very little sap running. "If you don't get those frosty nights and warm days, you don't get the sap," Lesperance notes. "Prices are high now because there is no syrup around." Lesperance has built his lucrative farm -gate business up to 300 gallons and sells the rest in 25 -gallon barrels to a processor who breaks it down into smaller packages for the gift -shop trade.0 FORESTRY About one-third of the land base of Grey and Bruce counties is forested with high quality hardwoods. To- day, more than 3,000 jobs in the area are in lumbering and wood manu- facturing. About 1,000 acres are re- forested annually.
