SHEEP AGENCY
The newly formed Ontario Sheep
Marketing Agency provides an orderly
marketing of Iamb throughout the prov-
ince. "We're organizing a better pro-
gram of selling our product," notes
District 2 (Grey -Bruce) chairman, Ian
Clarke.
A first attempt at an electronic auc-
tion last fall was reasonably successful,
and regular markets have been stream-
lined and expanded to other centres.
The market for Ontario lamb has
been good for the past two years, but
Clark sees a dark shadow on the horizon
if lower priced Australian and New
Zealand lamb is dumped on Ontario
markets as it has been in Western Can-
ada. Clarke wonders how Canadian
sheep producers who feed hay and con-
centrate for six months of the year can
compete with the imported Australian
and New Zealand lamb which is pas-
tured outside all year.
Clarke, a sheep producer for 10
years, has 150 Suffolk and Dorset ewes
on his farm in the Lucknow area.
District 2 is made up of seven district
directors and one Ontario director.
Vice-president is Lisa Berry of Holland
Centre, and secretary is Louise Maree of
Bognor.0
