50 GREY COUNTY PLOWING MATCH EDITION
AROUND GREY
THE WEIGH CLUB
About 60 per cent of the 630 beef
producers in Grey County are enrolled
in the Red Meat Plan and are members
of the Grey County Weigh Club.
The average weaning weight of
calves has increased by 54 pounds each
year from 1984 to 1986 — a 20 per cent
increase over two years. The current
average weaning weight is 549 pounds.
Reception in the county to the Red
Meat Plan has been very favorable, and
enrolment is steadily increasing, says
club president, Lloyd Mitchell of Owen
Sound.
An awards banquet is held in addi-
tion to three or four information meet-
ings each year. Awards are given to
producers with the highest weaning
weight and most improved weaning
weight in three herd size categories:
under 30 cows, 30 to 50 cows, and 50
plus cows.
Mitchell's herd of 80 cows is consid-
erably higher than the county average of
28 to 30 cows.0
