THE 15 GUESSES
OF DAIRYMEN
A University of Vermont dairy spe-
cialist has come up with the following
list of the 15 "most expensive guesses"
made by dairymen. But good business-
men, adds Stewart Gibson, don't guess
— they find out.
I guess she's bred back. I haven't
seen her in heat again.
I guess she's giving about70 pounds
a day, but don't know for sure.
I guess she was in heat last night.
I guess my hay (haylage) is about 18
per cent protein.
I guess my corn silage is about 30 per
cent dry matter.
I guess I ought to be feeding a min-
eral supplement.
I guess I need a high phosphorus
mineral.
I guess she may have a temperature.
She didn't eat her grain this morning.
I guess Ican get by with a 16 per cent
protein grain.
I guess I ought to be feeding some
soy.
I guess she might have been in heat
this morning.
I guess she's my highest producer.
I guess my ration's balanced.
I guess my cows are settling OK; I
don't see many of them come back in
heat.
I guess I ought to be on DHI.O
TIPS ON WRITING
NEWS RELEASES
News releases can be a valuable way
to publicize events sponsored by your
farm organization or community group.
The following tips will help you get the
attention of the news editor.
Write "News Release" in noticeable
letters on the top of the page.
Make note of a person the editor can
contact with questions. Be sure to in-
clude a telephone number.
Date the releasE.
Write a concise first paragraph that
attracts readers.
Include the "five Ws": who, what,
when, where, why — and how — in the
following paragraph or two.
Make sure the news release is sent in
good time. Old news is no news.0
