Dependability: When the going gets
tough, is the consultant prepared to stick
with you? Can you depend on him to
provide help not only now, but two,
three, or four years from now?
If your consultant can meet these
requirements, the chances are that you'll
get the assistance you need and value for
your money. Remember too that con-
sultants can play an integral part in the
well-established farm business by pro-
viding regular financial analysis.
The good advisor will be prepared to
work with you, your chartered account-
ant, and your lawyer. He should not
pretend to be a lawyer, and vice versa. It
takes teamwork to formulate good
plans.
Many professions todays are li-
censed, and it is time that consultants
have the same discipline through an
association for farm consultants which
would set a code of ethics.
It is of the utmost importance that
those who turn to consultants be told the
truth — if a farm business is at the point
of no return, the farmer must be told, and
given realistic advice.0
GOATS CAN
HELP PASTURE
Putting a few goats in a cattle or
sheep pasture can be an effective way to
control brush and weeds.
Controlling weeds and brush with
goats is effective on pas tures too steep or
rough to spray, and can be a viable
alternative to herbicides or mechanical
renovation.
Goats could graze with cattle and
sheep or separately in a pasture and
animal rotation system. Goats, cattle,
and sheep are different in the way they
graze, the parts of the plant they eat, and
the kinds of plants they eat. Although
sheep will eat some weeds cattle pass
up, both sheep and cattle eat grass.
Goats won't eat grass until they run out
of brush and weeds, and they prefer
brush to weeds.
A cattle or sheep producer could
borrow a few goats long enough to clean
up a brushy pasture. Brush regrows so
one-time grazing will not provide long-
term control.0
