700 HOLSTEIN
SOLD TO S.A.
By road and by sea, 700 Holstein
cattle with a price tag of $1.3 million
have left the southwestern Ontario com-
munity of Glanworth for the port city of
Guanta, Venezuela.
They are the biggest single shipment
of pedigreed cattle to South America for
Shore Holsteins International, which
shipped 3,500 head to South America
last year.
The cattle were bought for dairy pur-
poses and breeding stock. "The Hol-
stein is the best dairy cow in the world,"
says Murton Shore, vice-president of
Shore Holstein International. "It's been
shipped to more countries in the world
than any cattle. She adapts well to hot
and cold climates. She adapts well to all
environments and high altitude. The
cow is large and the highest producing in
the world."
The prices for pedigreed Holsteins
are lower now than 10 or 12 years ago
when prices were peaking, Shore says,
adding that various markets drove
prices up in the 1970s. There was a good
Japanese market and a good market for
registered Holsteins in Italy.
Japan, with a population five times
that of Canada, now has twice as many
cattle as this country. The export market
to Italy today is saturated, and Italy is
competing with Canada for the Euro-
pean market.
"We specialize in Holsteins," notes
Shore, who was born on the farm and has
a degree in animal science from the
University of Guelph. "It's a family
business. My two brothers, two neph-
ews, and our wives work here (on about
820 acres). My father and grandfather
had Holsteins. My father started busi-
ness in 1934 or 1935 by exporting to the
U.S."
"We export every class of livestock
such as the Angus and Polled Hereford
to Japan. We've shipped various breeds
of cattle to South America. We can
handle a lot of business. We have agents
in South America, Spain, and Japan ...
We've shipped a lot to Venezuela be-
cause milk prices are relatively good
there. The purchaser gets a relatively
good return on his investment."0
