The Rural Voice, 1987-09, Page 26THE ZURICH BEAN FEST Story and photos by Wayne Kelly About 6,000 hungry people arrived in the Huron County town of Zurich on August 22 to help celebrate the 22nd annual Bean Festival. Organizers of the event had prepared better than a ton of Ontario -grown white beans, baked up in their time -tested "secret" recipe and dished out in generous portions throughout the day. The Canadian Horseshoe Pitching Championship was also held, as it is every year, and 100 or more sidewalk vendors, an evening dance, beer gar- dens, and antique auto show all contri- buted to the festivities. The Ontario Bean Marketing Board is actively involved with local organ- izers and contributes up to half the beans 24 THE RURAL VOICE consumed. Board representatives dem- onstrated cooking, recipes, and com- modity information at the town hall. Photographs (top left, clockwise) show the midway slide, diners lining the picnic tables, Larry Biesinger of the Perth Pork Producers barbecuing chops, Harold McGee of R. R. 6, Goderich with his 1950 Ford, and Steve Wilson and Phil Erb of Zurich, dishing up the beans.
