WHAT'S NEW
HARUS WHEAT
AVAILABLE IN '87
Harus, a new white winter wheat
variety, is available in limited quantities
for planting in 1987.
A cross of Fredrick and Yorkstar,
Harus was developed by Dr. Abe Teich,
a plant breeder at Agriculture Canada's
Harrow Research Station. Yorkstar,
which was recently dropped from the
Ontario list of recommended varieties,
was the most popuiar winter wheat vari-
ety in Ontario before Fredrick was li-
censed in 1971.
Teich says that many breeders have
crossed Yorkstar and Fredrick, but now
in a single cross the top baking quality of
Yorkstar and the strong straw and ex-
ceptional disease resistance of Fredrick
have been captured.0

NEW INOCULANT
The Pride Brand Seeds division of
King Agro has introduced a corn silage
inoculant under the AgMaster label.
The product is the second in a proposed
series of crop -specific inoculants (the
first was developed for use on alfalfa).
The bacteria selected for AgMaster
Alfalfa Silage Inoculant are Lactobacil-
lus plantarum and Pediococcus acidi-
lactici. The inoculant is a water-soluble
powder which is freeze-dried and deliv-
ered cold and can be uniformly applied
to silage at the blower.0
