R. 1, Clifford were chosen Huron County's outstanding pork producers at the On- tario Pork Congress. Farmers are judged on production efficiency, breeding, feeding programs, successful management, community involvement, and pork promotion. The Douglas family runs a 20 -sow purebred Yorkshire farrow to finish operation, selling boars and gilts. Their herd is completely closed and has excel- lent health status. New bloodlines are brought in through AI and Caesarian section. The cropping program is a mixed grain and hay rotation. All corn is purchased. Ron is chairman of the Belmore arena board, an executive member of the Huron County Pork Producers' Asso- ciation, a provincial director on the Ontario Pork Producers Marketing Board, and first vice-president of the Howick Agricultural Society. Sharon is the first vice-president of the ladies' division of the agricultural society. They also belong to Ontario Swine Breeders, Quality Swine, and the AI Association.° ON-FARM FORAGE TESTS AVAILABLE On-farm forage testing, sponsored this year by a Ministry of Agriculture and Food Summer Experience '87 Pro- gram, will be available until August 28. A summer student makes appoint- ments to take samples of hay, haylage, and grain and forwards the sample to Agri -Food Laboratories in Guelph. Farmers are asked to take handfuls of haylage from various loads to get a ran- dom sample, and to freeze the sample until the forage tester arrives. Farmers enrolled in the Red Meat Program or the Pork Industry Improve- ment Program should have their feed vouchers handy. Assistance required with ration formulation will be available from local agricultural offices.°
