FEDERATION HAS
A BUSY MONTH
This past month has been a busy
time for the Grey County Federation
of Agriculture's executive. On March
28 we had our "Meet the Members" at
Rocklyn. This is an annual event at
which time our provincial and federal
representatives are invited to attend a
dinner meeting. A brief reflecting
concerns of our members and several
affiliated groups was presented. A
good discussion followed with edu-
cation high on the list of concerns of
those present.
On April 2 at Stothart Hall in
Priceville we met informally with
OFA president Brigid Pyke. Ontario
wines and Gay Lea cheese were served
to well over 100 in attendance. Brigid
outlined the OFA's policy of free trade
and discussed many other issues affect-
ing Ontario agriculture.
Grey County shared a booth with
Bruce at the Chesley Agri Fair. There
was a good deal of interest in the
Ontario Farm Machinery Agency dis-
play and in the OFA in general.
Apples were given away courtesy of
the Southern Georgian Bay Apple
Growers.
On April 7, the OFA Plowing
Match Committee met in the Hanover
boardroom. We were planning our
display for the OFA building at the
1987 IPM, to be held this year in St.
Vincent Township. The Grey County
committee will be meeting shortly to
finalize plans with our building con-
tractor.
On April 8, a multi -county meet-
ing took place in Ayton. Seven coun-
ties attended, with the Grey County
federation hosting. There was a good
turnout. During the morning session,

each county presented a short brief
outlining its concerns. A delicious
lunch was served by the Normanby
Minor Hockey mothers, and after
lunch we discussed concerns in gen-
eral. Free trade got plenty of atten-
tion. Waste disposal sites are a ser-
ious problem in many of our areas,
with runoff and seepage the worst
problems. Incineration was discussed
at length as a solution to getting rid of
disposal sites.
Our Committee on Home Beauti-
fication for the 1987 plowing match is
in its final stages of assessing. There
are 100 entrants. We expect that the
judging will be finished early in July.
Our award night is planned for late
August in Feversham. We are expect-
ing that 500 people will attend the
dinner that evening.

82 THE RURAL VOICE
On March 12, all the plowing
match committees met in Aberfoyle.
This meeting involved Hastings, last
year's host county, Grey County as the
1987 host, and the counties involved
over the next two years. It was a very
interesting meeting.
