Bayleton is registered in Ontario on hard red winter wheat only, and controls powdery mildew and rust. Tilt is registered in Ontario on hard red winter wheat and hard red spring wheat, and is active against powdery mildew, rust, and septoria. These fungicides may be very im- portant in protecting your wheat yields in 1987. Alternatively, weather con- ditions may be right and fungicides may be unnecessary. The bottom line is that if you don't have a permit, you don't have the choice. The manufacturers of Bayleton and Tilt have been putting on meet- ings covering proper usage, safety, and handling of these products, and helping farmers to fill in permit forms. These forms are collected and sent to Toronto for Ministry of the Environment signa- tures before being returned to farmers. If you scout your fields and detect disease or the opportunity for disease, you must present your permit to your farm supply dealer in order to purchase the fungicides. Be sure your dealer has also been through the intensive train- ing session on the particular product. If you miss the first round of regional meetings and still need a permit, contact the distributors of the product as soon as possible. You will have to go through a training session with the company representative before he can help you apply for the permit.° John Heard, Perth OMAF LISTENING RATED AN IMPORTANT SKILL Listening is an important commu- nication skill that requires attention to the speaker's non-verbal indicators as well as his words and meanings. Although we speak about 100 to 125 words a minute, we can think about 1,000 words a minute. Concen- trate on a speaker's words and be recep- tive to new topics.°
