and equipment — and then ask: what
can 1 do with this? am I close enough
to a city to sell a product (flowers, for
example) there? can I make use of a
bush or a creek? is a holiday home an
option? is there a busy highway close
by for a roadside stall? is such a stall
allowed? is there parking space?
Other questions may include:
could I use my buildings, my equip-
ment, and my knowledge for building
pens and farrowing crates for sale
during the slack wintertime? could I
become a consultant — do I have the
nerve to promote myself? is preparing
tax forms a possibility?
There are many opportunities for
diversification, Reesor noted. This
does not mean that specialization
should be discarded, but that one must
specialize in different ways. There are
grants available for many new ven-
tures, he added.
There will be good opportunities,
Reesor concluded, but farmers must be
optimistic enough to see them.OAV
HIRING PROGRAMS
ARE UNDERWAY
The Agricrew and Junior Agricul-
turalist experience programs are under-
way for 1987.
The programs, funded by the Ontar-
io Ministry of Agriculture and Food,
are designed to provide farmers with
summer assistance and rural and urban
students with farm work experience.
Agricrews are available at $90 a
day for a four -person crew. They can
be hired to help with haying, painting,
fencing, and general clean-up, but are
restricted from operating power take-
offs or chainsaws, working with creo-
sote, driving farm vehicles on public
roads, and second -storey construction.
Farmers hiring Junior Agricultur-
alists must be farming full-time and
willing to supervise and train inexper-
ienced youth. Host farmers will
contribute $10 a day of the training
allowance and provide room and board.
