The Rural Voice, 1987-05, Page 43NEWS OVC ESTABLISHES NEW DEPARTMENT The Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph has estab- lished a new department of population medicine which will focus on the health of groups of animals rather than individual animals. Canadian veterinarians have be- come increasingly aware of the im- portance of population medicine in recent years, says OVC dean Ole Nielsen. "It is particularly important to the agricultural industry because modern food production tends to involve large groups of animals."0 VISIT TO THE SOVIET UNION IS A SUCCESS Canada has been assured that its status as a major grain supplier to the Soviet Union will be maintained, reports Charles Mayer, Canadian Wheat Board minister. The USSR is Canada's largest grain customer. Mayer, who recently returned from the USSR, visited grain -growing areas in the southern part of the country. His delegation also visited an agri- cultural research centre outside of Volgograd and spent a day at a 39,000 - acre collective farm near Stavropol. The farm specializes in cereal, dairy, livestock, and special crop production. In Rostov -on -Don, the delegation toured the plant of the world's largest combine manufacturer, Rostselmash, which has the capacity to produce 96,000 combines annually. "Soviet and Canadian agriculture have much in common," Mayer notes. "Our farmers work in much the same weather and soil conditions and share similar concerns about research and soil fertility." Canada and the USSR signed a five- year grain agreement last October. The agreement calls for the purchase of a minimum of 25 -million tonnes of Canadian wheat and feed grains between August 1, 1986 and July 31, 1991. Under the previous five-year agreement, which also called for the purchase of a minimum of 25 -million tonnes, the USSR actually bought 35.7 -million tonnes of grain.° SCOTT'S INDUSTRIAL & FARM SUPPLY Nuts & Bolts (all fides) Hydraulic hose & fittings V -bele Beanngs Roller Chain Westward Tools Epps Pressure Washers R.
