AG IN CLASSROOM
CONFERENCE HELD
More than 120 education and
agriculture representatives from eight
Canadian provinces and one U.S. state
gathered in London last month to
discuss their participation in "agri-
culture in the classroom."
The project is a growing volunteer
movement which brings information
about the role and importance of
agriculture to school children across
the country.
The three-day conference, presented
by the southwestern Ontario Women
for the Support of Agriculture and
sponsored in part by the federal and
provincial agricultural ministries, was
the first of its kind in Canada.
Addressing conference delegates,
the Saskatchewan education minister,
Lome Hepworth, warned that Canada
is "in danger of fostering an
agriculturally illiterate society."
Delegates learned about classroom
materials, teacher -training programs,
volunteer involvement, and agricul-
tural careers.
In Ontario, the Ministry of Agri-
culture and Food has developed re-
sources for the Grade 9 science cur-
riculum and more than 30 professional
development days on agriculture were
held for teachers from September to
November 1986 alone.0
