access to the American market, for
instance, she said, while supply -
managed commodities need to control
imports to maintain domestic prices.
The OFA's message about supply -
managed commodities is "Don't touch
them," Pyke said. "We can't look
around and see any system in the world
that works any better."
Free trade and animal welfare have
been issues for some time, but Pyke
told the audience that much of the
OFA's work is done to "head off at the
pass" harmful proposals before most
farmers are aware of a problem.
An example is the seven per cent
investment tax credit on the purchase
of new farm machinery, due to be
phased out in 1988.
That credit has meant $100 million
to Canadian farmers, Pyke said. "But
if people wake up three years from
now and they still have that credit,
they're not likely to think, 'Well, my
farm organizations did that for me.'
But there isn't anybody else out there
doing it for you, that's for sure."0
