BUTLER PROJECT IS A
SIGNIFICANT SUCCESS
In the 1930s, Ross Butler, a
leading Canadian artist, was com-
missioned by the Ministry of Edu-
cation to produce pictures of dairy and
beef cattle and horses. These were
distributed to every school in Ontario
for use in teaching. Later, the federal
government procured the series for use
in all provinces. But over the years,
some of these pictures were lost and
some became outdated.
The Women's Institute recently set
about remedying the situation, and
through its Butler Project has com-
bined art, agriculture, and live animals
at the London Art Gallery to promote
rural heritage and urban understanding.
A committee of Oxford County
Women's Institute members was set
up to donate good, clear livestock pic-
tures with bilingual information and
teacher guides to all Ontario schools.
In future, these pictures will be
available to all Canadian provinces.
Between April 12 and May 10,
samples of Ross Butler's work are on
display at the London Art Gallery.
From there, the display will go on
tour.
On April 12, the Oxford County
Women's Institute arranged for live
animals to be on display at the London
Art Gallery. At the same time, in co-
operation with the London Board of
Education's art consultant, a series of
children's art titled Down on the Farm
was shown.

PORK PRODUCERS
NOTE USDA FIGURES
Recent USDA releases report that
farrowing intentions in the months of
September to December 1987 are 108
per cent of last year's figures, so pork
producers should think twice about
expanding, said John Lichti at the
Perth County Pork Producers meeting
last month.
Lichti is a director to the Ontario
board, which recently elected Dave
McDonald of Glencoe as chairman of
the OPPMB.ORM
