early spring with
recrea-
tional vehicle has
re -seed itself. "Frost seeding" in
early spring a four-wheel vehicle has solved part of the
problem. The frost seeding is best
done when there is still three to four
inches of snow on the flat ground or,
at least, snow in the corners of the
field. During the day the temperatures
are mild and at night it is cold and
frosty. The ground is expanding and
contracting, thus forcing the seed into
the ground and creating self -seeding.
There is also a formula used to
calibrate regrowth so one can project
the number of fields needed to carry the
livestock numbers. In spring it takes
about 21 days for regrowth and in the
drier, hotter days of summer it takes
about 40 days.
High-power electric fencing is
catching on because you can fence a
farm for approximately one-quarter of
the price of paige wire. Electric
fencing is quicker to install and in the
spring when time is critical it is more
convenient.

CHECK SOYBEAN
SEED QUALITY WITH
GERMINATION TEST
The unseasonable wet weather last
fall has contributed to low inventories
of high quality soybean seed. Pro-
ducers are advised to check the quality
of seeds by conducting a germination
test.
To get a good indication of seed
quality, fill a flat with soil and plant it
with 100 seeds. Water the seeds and
put the flat in a cool location (with a
temperature of 10 to 12 degrees C) for
a week. Then bring the flat into a
warm room and count the number of
healthy plants that emerge within four
or five days. The result will be the
kind of stand you can expect in the
field, and you can adjust the seeding
rate accordingly.
Producers may note more cracks
and seed discolouring this year. It may
be advisable to use pedigree or certified
seed rather than Canada number one or
common seed.0
