The Rural Voice, 1987-04, Page 54fun started. It was like a three -ringed
circus. You see the cows on our farm
aren't milk cows. They are "nurse"
cows. All a nurse cow has to do in
life is have a strong healthy calf and
nurse it to weaning size, not supply
milk for my Mom.
Away we all went to the pasture
to select a quiet cow. We picked a
nice black one with a young calf at
her side. The idea was to tie her up,
keep the calf away from her, milk her,
take what we needed and give the rest
to the calf. Sounds simple, but you'd
be surprised how this can tum a seem-
ingly quiet cow into a kicking, ranting
old brute. Mom must have been
kicked at least half a dozen times,
with only a quart of milk to show for
it. She was so disgusted that she let
the cow go back to the pasture and fed
the milk to the cat. You know it's
funny, Mom never complains about
the price of milk anymore.
Times seem to be hard for farm
families at present, with rising inter-
est rates and low retums for products
sold. There is danger of this way of
life dying and larger -scale production
taking over. With more efficient
methods I'm sure some of the family
fun will be lost.
In the future I may pursue a career
as a veterinarian because of my farm
background and fondness for animals.
Farmers of the future beware.
Someday when you call for a vet to
vaccinate your steers or deliver a calf,
you may be surprised to see me drive
up to your farm gate ready and eager to
assist you.0
