The Rural Voice, 1987-04, Page 52NEWS RESEARCH POINTS TO CHANGES IN POULTRY Custom-designed poultry are a step closer now that scientists have succeed- ed in passing on the genes of a weak virus to new generations of chickens. The virus genes were inserted into embryos in the egg by U.S. Depart- ment of Agriculture researchers. This laboratory procedure may eventually lead to chickens that resist disease and lay bigger eggs, say geneticists. The virus used was avian leukosis, which causes a common poultry dis- ease. It may become possible to make this virus self-destruct, researchers say. So far, the virus genes have been inherited by three generations of chickens. Until now, researchers have been able to get only one vertebrate, the mouse, to pass on to its offspring viral genes inserted in the laboratory environment.0 HUMANE SOCIETY DRAWS VOLUNTEERS Vicki Miller of the Toronto Humane Society reports that recent publicity given to her organization's controversial stands has contributed to a new influx of volunteers. Volunteers have increased to 275 from 180 in October, according to figures recently released by the society. Miller adds that the publicity has also hindered the society's day to day work. The Ontario public trustee has ordered an audit of the Toronto soci- ety's financial records and is seeking to halt salary payments to executive director Kathleen Hunter.0 COLLEGE WINS RECRUITS Centralia College has been visiting about 130 high schools to recruit students, and Kathy Biondi, head of communications, reports success. "Last year, there was an average decline in enrolment of 12 per cent at the five colleges of agricultural tech- nology. We've seen an improvement already in the number of applications for the undersubscribed agricultural program."0 INNd1'ATOR "Simply the Best" • • • Low maintenance Virtual Elimination of Silo Climbing (no door removal) Superior Unloading Capacity Call Today For an In -Silo Demonstration (No Obligation) 1 SEE US FOR Belt Feeders, Belt Conveyors, Corn Crib Unloaders, also Hoof Trim Stalls for Rent CLARKHILL FEEDERS LTD.
