SOIL CONSERVATION
WEEK IS THIS MONTH
April 13 to 17 has been designated
the third annual National Soil Con-
servation Week.
Soil degradation costs Canada more
than $1 billion a year, and the week is
designed to heighten consciousness of
agricultural losses. According to Agri-
culture Canada agronomist Dave
Murray, a major culprit is the move
away from forage crops such as alfalfa
to continuous production of row crops
such as corn and soybeans.
He urges producers to employ ter-
racing, crop rotations, and conser-
vation tillage to reduce erosion.
Farmers and researchers looking for
information about solving soil pro-
blems are invited to use SWAIN, the
Soil and Water Activity Inventory,
which is a computerized data base at
the federal Department of Agriculture
detailing soil and water conservation
work across the country.
The inventory breaks each project
down into its scope (international to
local), location, amount and source of
funding, time frame, number of people
involved, organization responsible,
problem addressed, and approach taken.
