WHAT'S NEW?
PIONEER LAUNCHES
ALFALFA VARIETY
Pioneer Hi -Bred of Chatham has in-
troduced an alfalfa variety with mod-
erate resistance to verticillium wilt.
"Of all varieties on the Canadian
alfalfa market, Pioneer (R) variety
5444 has the highest level of vert-
icillium wilt resistance available,"
says Tim Welbanks, agronomy ser-
vices manager for Pioneer.
5444 also has excellent tolerance
to fusarium wilt and spotted alfalfa
aphid, along with moderate ratings for
potato leafhopper and bacterial wilt.
But Welbanks notes that this new vari-
ety is not recommended on land where
phytophthora root rot is concerned.
