The Rural Voice, 1987-03, Page 44WHAT THE FARM MEANS TO ME
Our farm means a lot to me. To
tell you why is very simple. I've
grown to love it. If anyone offered to
buy our farm, it would mean no more
barn chores, feeding calves, or cleaning
them out, bedding
them with straw,
feeding cows,
cleaning mangers,
and feeding hay;
no more picking
stones on hot
days or piling the
wood and helping
scrub the milking
parlour on Satur-
days. It would
also mean no
more baby calves,
or goats, no more birds, dogs or cats,
and no more ponds filling up with
rain. There would be no more racing
through the fields with my brother and
sisters, or picking wildflowers on hot
summer days. There wouldn't be any
big bush to wander through, no more
frog ponds, or pretty trees in our back
yard, or a big comfortable farm house.
I would miss the fresh air and running
through the cornstalks, searching for
my four-leaf clovers and making dan-
delion necklaces. There is nothing
nicer than taking my little sisters to
the barn and showing them a newly
born calf or goat. A very rich part of
my life would be
missing if I was
to leave the
farm. After
hearing this,
how could any-
one want me to
move? My mind
is made up! I
love our country
home, and never
want to move. I
know my parents
feel the same; I
have never moved before and my dad
has always lived here; my dad and
mom have worked hard here; my dad,
a farmer, and my mom, a part-time
nurse. She looks after five children;
we also have cousins helping us on
the farm. Our farm is big; we would
miss it. That's why I'll never ever
want to move.

Leaves are turning
brown,
Corn stalks are turning
golden,
Corn is yellow now,
Combines like to
eat corn up,
Then the stalks
lie down to sleep
