Dan Thiel, 13 Zurich Public School Second for poem, ages 9 to 13 o: Planting Time (the Whole Story) When we plant corn, wheat, beans, and stuff like that, we have to work the fields up first. We plow the fields, then cultivate the fields a couple of times. We fertilize the field to make the soil richer. We buy our fertilizer from the mill. They bring it in a big truck. They will fertilize it for you, but we do it ourselves. When we are finished fertilizing it, we have to buy our corn and wheat. When we get the seeds we have to lift the lids off the buckets that hold the seeds. There is one kind of seed that is pink and pow- dery. It will burn your skin if you get it on your face or hands. When we get the seeds in the planter we go and plant the seeds. When we are finished we have to hook the harrows up be- hind the tractor. The harrows are used to push the seeds in the ground so the birds don't pull them out and eat them. Then we wait a couple of months. When we combine the wheat we get someone else to do it for us. We put our grain in a little silo. When the silo is full we put our grain in our bin in the top of our bam. When we do com we put the corn cobs in a bin. The bin has a little tunnel through the middle to keep the corn moist but we don't like the tunnel because the rats get in and chew the corn. Then the corn is no good anymore. When we harvest our corn we use a piece of machinery called a com picker. The corn picker picks the corn off the stalks and the com cobs go up an elevator. Then it goes in a hole and when it comes out the husks and the skin are all gone ... We do not feed the cows corncobs. We use a corn shelter ... The cobs get chopped up and we use them as bedding. The loose corn gets mixed with other supplement to make feed for our cattle. The animals live happily ever after and so do we: for another year!
