CSGA PROMOTES
SEED MONTH
March has again been designated
Good Seed Month, and through its
campaign the Canadian Seed Growers'
Association (CSGA) hopes to promote
awareness among farmers of the
advantages of using certified seed.
The CSGA is the official Canadian
certification agency for all seed crops
except potatoes and tree seeds, and it
monitors the processing of seed to
meet the requirements of the Canada
Seeds Act and Regulations.
While more than 80 per cent of
cultivated land in Canada is sown with
non -certified seed each year, the associ-
ation cites cleanliness, size, trueness
to variety, and convenience among the
advantages of certified seed.
Planting seed from the bin may
save money on the purchase, says the
association, but tests have shown that
bin -run seed can cost more in the long
run because yield and quality are lower.
The commercial seed business,
including 5,500 growers and 150
commercial seed companies in Canada,
generates more than $350 million
annually. 0
