Q.S. CO-OP REPORTS
SUCCESSFUL YEAR
The Quality Swine Co-op has
reported a steady growth in its mem-
bership during 1986, the addition of
121 members bringing the total to
more than 2,200. Membership is
open to pork producers whose herds
meet the required standards of types,
performance, integrity, management,
and health.
The co-op also reports sales of
over $23.6 million during a record-
setting year. And the Q.S. Tele -
auction marketing system recorded
sales of 298,600 feeder pigs. Q.S.
feeder -pig sales represent approximate-
ly 20 per cent of the Ontario feeder -pig
industry.
Sales of performance -tested cross-
bred gilts also increased (more than 10
per cent), and the market for terminal
purebred and crossbred boars to the
commercial industry was maintained.
During the year, Q.S. established a
research and development sow herd of
purebred Hampshire and Durocs of
minimal disease (excellent health
status) to help improve the overall
quality and performance of both breeds
in Ontario. These pure strains will be
released to Q.S. breeders and boar
multipliers to produce Hamp-Duroc
crossbred boars.
Jim Hunter has been promoted by
the board of directors to replace Don
McLean, who took an early retirement
after serving Q.S. members for 17 1/2
years. At the annual meeting to be
held March 27 at the St. Marys Arena,
directors will once again be elected to
the board from various producer
groups. Guest speaker will be Henry
Schriver of Grafton, Ohio, who is
known for his true -life tales and stories
about how co-operatives have proved
successful. 0
