U.S. EASES CATTLE
IMPORT RULES
Cattle from Ontario and Quebec are
now eligible for entry into the U.S.
after a single blood test done within 30
days of their departure from Canada.
"The United States imposed strict
import restrictions a decade ago," says
Minister of Agriculture John Wise. "I
am pleased to see that, a year after the
two provinces were declared free of
bovine brucellosis, these restrictions
are being significantly eased."
Similar restrictions against cattle
from other provinces were dropped dur-
ing the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Bovine brucellosis, a contagious dis-
ease that causes abortion and produc-
tion losses in cattle, can also cause
serious illness in humans.
In 1985, Canada became one of
only six countries in the world to have
eradicated bovine brucellosis from its
cattle herds. The U.S. has brucellosis -
free herds in various regions. Regions
not brucellosis -free are classified in
terms of A, B, and C levels, C being
the most infected.
In Canada, says Wise, surveillance
for brucellosis will continue until the
1990s to prevent re -infection. Mature
cattle from certified brucellosis -free
herds in the U.S. may enter Canada
with one negative brucellosis test.0

RECOMMENDATIONS
ARE AVAILABLE
The 1987 Field Crop Recommen-
dations are now available at county
agricultural offices. The annual recom-

in Ontario.
Farmers in Huron and Perth coun-
ties may also be interested in the
annual report of the Perth Soil and
Crop Improvement Association (Strat-
ford OMAF). This report features the
details of on-farm trials conducted in
Huron and Perth in the past year:
conservation cropping, cereals, inten-
sive cereal management, hard red
spring wheat, alfalfa establishment,
corn production, fertilizer use, soy-
beans and white beans, and the high
yield com competition.
