The Rural Voice, 1987-03, Page 23depth and furrows to a depth of 4
inches. Combine soil cores from
ridges and furrows in equal numbers
to make up the composite.
University of Minnesota: In chisel
plow, offset disk, and no -till, continue
to take soil samples from 0 to 6 inches
for P and K analyses. A shallow sam-
ple from 0 to 2 inches may be needed
for soil surface pH considerations.
In ridge -till, take samples after
planting, but before cultivation. For
other times of the year, sample half-
way up the ridge only.
University of Kentucky: Sample to
a 4 -inch depth in no -till.
Purdue University: In no -till fields
when N is injected below the surface,
sample at 2 depths, 0 to 4 inches and
4 to 8 inches. The same applies for all
reduced -till fields whether N is applied
surface or sub -surface. In no -till when
N is surface -applied, sample 0 to 2 in-
ches and 2 to 8 inches.
University of Illinois: A compo-
site soil sample needs to be taken for
each 3 to 4 -acre portion to a depth of 7
inches. A 0 to 2 -inch sample will help
to pinpoint pH changes.
As far as I'm concerned, there is a
good deal of worrying about nutrient
stratification for nothing. If you have
three to five years of soil test and
tissue test histories as well as past
fertilizer use and crop yields before you
start into conservation tillage and/or
sub -surface banding of nutrients, your
worries are half solved. If you pick a
good program (I like the University of
Wisconsin's) and deal with a compe-
tent, experienced agronomist, you
shouldn't have a worry in the world —
that is, with the exception of drought,
hail, flood, frost, and poor markets!O
