The Rural Voice, 1987-03, Page 21What's going on (or off' between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. is important. The demand for electricity reaches its peak between 5 and 7 on weekday evenings. That's because many stores, factories and offices are still open. At at home, more lights are coming on; the heat is being turned up; meals are cooking; more hot water is being used and TV viewing increases. This all adds up to create an electrical rush hour. One way to reduce this peak is to do everything possible to avoid wasting electricity. Another is to shift some of the major uses of electricity — the ones you don't really have to do between 5 and 7 — to other times of the day. If everyone did this, it would help to keep Hydro rates down. The higher the peak, the more facilities are required for generating and distributing electricity. And they cost money. Lowering costs now will help keep future rate increases to a minimum. Ontario Hydro MARCH 1987 19
