2 THE RURAL VOICE
EDITOR'S DESK
The results of The Rural Voice
competition are in, and we're sorry we
couldn't print more than the selection
you'll find inside. All month long we
found the mailbox full of wisdom,
good humour, quirky imagination, and
high drama. What we can't reproduce
are the brilliant colours at full size —
and one of the drawings that came in
with a manger full of Scotch tape and
real hay — much of which ended up in
:he editor's lap when she opened the
envelope. So to Jarrett Johnson of
Paisley, a special thanks — he
certainly got the novelty vote.
Andrew Dixon is with us again
this month, and he looks back at the
community barn raising and the
festivities :ha: followed: "1t might
have been dull," he notes, "but com-
pared to the modern cocktail party it
was wildly exhilarating."
And John Redmond has gathered a
variety of perspectives on the issues
and regulations surrounding pesticides.
What constitutes "acceptable risk" and
who makes the decisions? Should
farmers be certified to use pesticides?
And how does agriculture and agri-
business maintain the confidence of
the public?
Plus: another in James Anderson's
series about rural architecture, and an
OFA fieldman's best recipe for bread. 0
