The Rural Voice, 1987-01, Page 62Irwin Van Wyck of Sydenham Township spoke to the meeting with regard to the problems he has been experiencing with his water system due to run-off from the Owen Sound landfill site. This past fall, Mr. Van Wyck's water supply to his livestock became polluted due to run-off from the landfill site. The city of Owen Sound has been trucking water to his livestock, but to date he has not been compensated for the cost of obtaining an alternate water supply, nor have they been willing to take any steps to correct the situation. The Property Committee of the Grey federation has agreed to meet with Mr. Van Wyck and with the help of OFA will act as a mediator in attempting to obtain an acceptable agreement from the city. The Membership Committee, in co-operation with freldman Doug Gowanlock, has arranged this sched- ule for membership canvasses. A Community Tragedy Tragedy hit a young Euphrasia Township family on December 3, 1986. Jim Witherspoon, 33, of R. R. 3, Markdale in Grey County perished in a barn fire while he tried unsuccessfully to remove his livestock from the burning building. The modern dairy barn and the entire dairy herd were destroyed. Jim is survived by his wife, Judy, and four young children ranging in age from 5 to 13. Neighbours, friends, and directors of the Euphrasia Township Federation of Agriculture have organized a benefit fund and are canvassing all of Euphrasia Town- ship. Cash donations may also be made at the Grey County Federation of Agriculture office in Hanover or at any branch of the Bank of Montreal. All cash donations will be gratefully received. Our sincere sympathy is extended to the Witherspoon family and we would encourage everyone to give gener- ously to this fund. NEWSLETTER , Grey County Federation of Agriculture 44610th St., Hanover, Ontario N4N 1P9 519-364-3050 SUCCESSES AND GOALS The Line Fences Act has finally been amended after many months of lobbying and discussion. The Grey County federation was successful in its plea to have the act dealt with in November despite the fact that the minister had informed us about a week earlier that it was no longer a priority. We extend our thanks to Bob McKessock who, backed by pressure from the Grey County federation, had the act placed on the order paper and within only a few days had received third reading and royal assent. We have been advised that the major change in the act lies in the appeal process. Instead of the Small Claims Court judge ruling on appeals, a fine fences referee will hear the appeal. The referee's committee will be composed of local people from the agricultural community. We have been assured that this legislation should be in place and operating by the spring of 1987. Barry Tolton, agricultural represen- tative for Grey County, reported that an application has been made to have some renovations done at the OMAF office in Markdale, which would include enlarging the boardroom. It is hoped that this will be done within the not to distant future. Doug Gowanlock reported that 110 new memberships had been sold in Grey County during 1986. With good support from the members and dir- ectors, Grey should have no problem maintaining its membership numbers. During 1986, Holland and St. Vincent township federations were rejuvenated. Our best wishes to the executives and directors in these townships. The annual Grey County Fed- eration of Agriculture Curling Bon - spiel will be held February 14 at Markdale. Anyone interested in enter- ing a rink should contact Carman Hamill. A brief discussion was held regarding the "Oleo Margarine Act" which prohibits the sale in Ontario of butter -coloured margarine. The act hasn't been adhered to, so the directors were urged to write to their MPP to register their objection. 58 THE RURAL VOICE
