The Rural Voice, 1987-01, Page 39NEWS more analytical method in the certi- fication process, Anthon warned that relying solely on lab analysis of the final product would be sorely inadequate. An international perspective was provided by Dr. Michael Jost, the chairman of the Erntedank Control Committee based in Lansing, Michigan. Jost's work takes him throughout the American midwest and occasionally to the Canadian prairies and Europe. In his certification program, Jost uses a questionnaire and field tours. He stressed the need for organic growers to abide by strict standards that are carefully enforced if they want to build a respectable position in the marketplace. Also speaking at the meeting was Dave Hayman, a water quality technician with the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority. The authority's recent studies, aimed at pinpointing the cause of the bacterial contamination that has caused beach closures during the past few years, led the authority, unexpectedly, to the barnyard. Apparently, the relatively recent advent of beach pollution is the result of the slow but steady intensification of livestock production — the worst polluters turned out to be milkhouse wastes and inadequate manure storage. Hayman outlined the study done on the Pittock watershed, the reservoir most affected, and illustrated some of the solutions for waste treatment and waste containment that the authority and farmers are now working on.0 Shelly Paulocik OFFICERS ELECTED FOR SYDENHAM At its meeting last month, the Sydenham Federation of Agriculture drafted a resolution for the county level asking that incineration be promoted in Owen Sound and environs with the idea that land -fill sites will eventually be obsolete. Newly re-elected president of the Sydenham federation is Irvin Van- wyck. Ralph Snyder was elected first vice-president, Fred Hukstra second vice-president, and Lloyd Mitchell secretary-treasurer.0 ji,l;!,14 r° r'h;t'vtlrrw t.et¢.i tYl.';'iPplpt'f:.V1'YNr QIil41!UIfity6'li,44 yrt1 THANK YOU We at McGavin Farm Equipment would like to extend our sincere thanks to all of our customers over the past 50 years.
