OCIA CERTIFIES
14 FARMS
The 14 Ontario farms recently cer-
tified by the Organic Crop Improve-
ment Association (Ontario) can now
market products under a "certified
organic" banner.
The OCIA, which began in the
U.S. three years ago, has been oper-
ating in Ontario since June of 1985,
when an organizing effort prompted by
Oak Manor Farms of Tavistock came
to fruition, says Tomas Nimmo,
marketing manager of Oak Manor
Farms and a member of the OCIA
marketing committee.
To quality for the "certified organ-
ic" banner, farms must follow a strict
30 -page organic standards manual and
agree to an on-farm visit by an inde-
pendent inspector contracted by the
association.
Basic guidelines require that a farm
be free from synthetic chemical use for
three years (some fertilizers may be
used for a short transition period) and
that a program of positive soil build-
ing (green manure, plow -down, com-
panion cropping, etc.) be used. Crop
rotation is a must, notes Tomas
Nimmo, and animals must be raised in
accordance with a policy of not,
generally speaking, using antibiotics
or growth promoters.
The association's marketing
committee was recently formed "to
promote a generic concept of organic
foods," Nimmo says, adding that the
OCIA now has about 50 to 60
potential organic farmers on its list of
candidates.
